Sultana Kamal is a Lawyer and Human Rights Activist. She is one of the most prominent activists in Bangladesh, well-known for her long standing work on human rights and social activism.
As part of the liberation movement in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Sultana Kamal was active in Kachi Kanchar Mela, Sangskriti Sangsad, Struggles for Cultural Autonomy and the ’69 mass upheavals. In 1971 she joined the Muktibahini and was one of the founders of the Bangladesh Field Hospital in Agartala for the freedom fighters.
She was the Executive Director of Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK), a human rights organisation in Bangladesh for over 15 years. She was appointed as an Advisor to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh in October 2006 from which she resigned with 3 other colleagues in December the same year.
Along with Center for Social Activism (CSA), she is the Chairperson of ‘We Can End Violence Alliance’ and a Co-chair of International Chittagong Hill Tracts Commission. In addition, she is currently the chairperson of Transparency International Bangladesh. She is also a Trustee of Protichi Bangladesh- founded by Amartya Sen, the Chair of Blue Planet Initiative, Member of Chayanaut, and National Rabindra Sangeet Parishad Council. Sultana Kamal is the Convener of National Committee for Saving the Sundarbans and Rukhe Darao Bangladesh. At present, she is the chairperson of South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR).
She is also affiliated with Asia Pacific Forum for Women Law and Development among many other regional and international networks.
